On Tuesday 21st January, Cardiff Cathedral – the Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St. David played host to a memorial Service for the Argentinian football player Emiliano Sala marking the first anniversary of his tragic death.
Sala was due to join the ranks of Cardiff City Football Club when his plane went down over the English Channel. The service was requested by Cardiff City Football Club and was attended by members of the management, players, administrative staff and supporters. Led by Archbishop George Stack and Fr. Daniel Stanton, prayers were said in Spanish by Canon Peter Collins as a tribute to Emiliano’s Argentinian heritage.
The Argentine national flag was displayed on the sanctuary alongside the Vatican flag. A photo of the late player was displayed as a focus of prayer.
Archbishop George led the reflection based on “So many different lengths of time” by the poet Brian Patten. The service concluded with the playing of the National Anthem of Argentina.
Following the service a member of the congregation described St. David’s Cathedral as “… the most peaceful place in Cardiff”.
