World Meeting of Families

The World Meeting of Families started in 1994, when Pope St John Paul II asked the Pontifical Council for the Family (now part of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life) to establish an international event of prayer, catechesis and celebration that would draw participants from around the globe and that would help to strengthen the bonds between families and bear witness to the crucial importance of marriage and the family to all of society.

Held every three years and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the Family, the World Meeting of Families is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the evet whilst adding greater depth of meaning to our understanding of families.

The next World Meeting is to be hosted by Rome in 2021

Dublin, Ireland, hosted the most recent World Meeting of Families in August 2018; the theme was “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”.
