Routine Care and Maintenance of Places of Worship in Wales: a guide for volunteers


This one-day beginner / intermediate-level course is designed to help those who care for places of worship (very often as volunteers) to understand their faith building, and take practical action to look after it.

The course is provided by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), with the generous support of CADW. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.

Topics covered will include:

– What is maintenance? Why do buildings decay?
– Why is maintenance important? What should we look for?

Managing Maintenance
– Planning for the routine care of historic places of worship.
– Understanding the role of professional inspections and reports,
– Managing relationships with professionals, contractors and specialists.

Staying safe
– Risk assessment, working at height, fire safety.

The course will be presented by James Innerdale, an accredited architect, historic buildings consultant and former SPAB technical officer, and Elgan Jones, an accredited architect, SPAB caseworker, and former SPAB scholar.
