“In 1916 His Holiness Pope Benedict XV issued the Papal Bull that erected the Ecclesiastical Province of Cardiff, in words which still resonate today. Pope Benedict wrote: “Wales, in the Celtic origin of its people, and in the usage of its language and customs, is so distinct from the other regions of England (sic), that it would seem also to need to be distinguished in ecclestiastical order from the other Churches and to be given its own hierarchy.”
The Catholic Church in Wales contributes fully to bilingual public life in Wales, both in her commitment to the search for Christian Unity and to the flourishing of Welsh civic and cultural life. For the way to peace is built on the foundations of justice and mercy for all in society. Christians have the duty of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ without fear or favour, and yet in constructive dialogue with all persons of goodwill.”
