Belmont Monk ordained Deacon in Rome Basilica

On Wednesday 15th June 2016, surrounded by the splendour of the Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls in Rome, Dom Patrick Lobo O.S.B. of Belmont Abbey was ordained to the Order of Deacon by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon of Liverpool, along with eight of his fellow students from the Pontifical College Beda.

Br Patrick was accompanied and supported by Abbot Paul Stonham, Fr Michael Evans and Br Alistair from the community of Belmont Abbey, and Canon William Isaac represented the Diocese at this splendid occasion.   Members of Br. Patrick’s family were also present along with the Benedictine Community of St. Paul who look after the basilica. Following the beautiful and moving Ordination Mass, there was a truly magnificent reception for all guests at the Beda College.

The Modern Day Mission

The Basilica of St Paul outside the walls traditionally holds the tomb of the great Missionary Apostle.  Following his conversion on the Road to Damascus, St. Paul became a zealous champion for the preaching of the Gospel to the Gentiles.  The Faith spread outside of the confines of the Jewish community and the Good News has spread to all parts of the Earth.  A splendid location for the ordination of a new Deacon who returns to what are the modern day missionary lands of the United Kingdom.  We pray that the great Saint accompany Deacon Patrick as his path of ministry begins.
