Archbishop offers condolences and prayers on the death of the Duke of Edinburgh

On hearing of the news of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh earlier today, Archbishop George Stack said:

“On behalf of the Catholic communities in the Archdiocese of Cardiff, the Diocese of Menevia and the Diocese of Wrexham I offer to Her Majesty the Queen our condolences and prayers on the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

I do so in gratitude for his example of dedication and service to the people of the United Kingdom over so many years. In particular, I pay tribute to his extraordinary contribution to the future of innumerable  young people through his initiative and challenge in establishing the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. His contribution to the growth of awareness in the ecological balance of nature in our fragile planet also bears testament to his concern for the welfare of future generations.

In giving thanks to God we also pray for his eternal reward, not just as a well oved public figure but as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his own family.

May he rest in peace.”
